You Are Unique – So Is Your Business

If you read my earlier post about voice, you may be curious about other ways businesses can demonstrate – or even find – their unique voice.

Another great way is simply by writing.

No doubt this is a favorite of mine, but in reality, it’s a natural way for anyone to find their true voice, business or otherwise.

You don’t necessarily have to have a project in mind like a blog post, press release, email, or anything else, but what you should keep in mind while writing is something regarding your business.

For example, here’s an exercise:

Say you’re trying to figure out exactly the voice of your business and you have an upcoming event.

  • Consider drafting a short, hypothetical email to a friend on what you would say about it.
  • Relax, be honest and yourself, and with your business event in mind…
  • Simply tell your friend in your own words what it’s about, why they should come, and what they can expect.

What’s the purpose of the exercise?

When we talk with our friends, we are more relaxed and honest with ourselves. Our true selves come to the surface a little more often and our voices are a little stronger. Although ‘authentic’ has been a little overused, it truly is what people are looking for. If you have a different persona with your friends and family, yet are completely unrecognizable at work, your voice has been lost – or was never found.

Allow the voice that you naturally have and would share with friends, even if a little conservative, come out when you are sharing about your business with strangers. The enthusiasm will be contagious – and memorable.
