5 Quick Tips About Voice

The sound of YOUR voice!

Earlier this month, we talked about how business can identify their unique voice. We covered a few exercises and talked about how awesome it is when you find the only voice you’ll ever need.

In this week’s post, I’m going to give you a rundown of some quick tips about voice you can work on (or cross off!) so as you move forward you can see how far you’ve come!

  1. Be Yourself.
‘Be Yourself. Everyone else is taken.’ Oscar Wilde. Best quote ever. 100% applies to voice. Everyone in marketing talks about your USP (unique selling point) …want to know what yours is? You.
  2. Incorporate your passions into your brand.
It’s easier to be you, when you’re doing something you’re passionate about. We all need to work to pay the bills. But who said you can’t pull your passions into your work? Me? I give a percentage of all my earnings to the charities of my choice. Since I can’t be out there defending wildlife myself, I support those who can through the work I do. The more I work, the more I can support.
  3. Do a voice check-in with others.
Not sure how you’re coming across? Ask! Others really do love to help. Really – ask them! If you don’t sound like yourself, you’re trying to sound like someone else whether you realize it or not. That’s not your You’ll be better able to gauge how you really sound when you ask those closest to you.
  4. Define Your style
Are you naturally creative, artsy, and have flare? Or are you more of a direct what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) sort of a person who cuts to the heart of a problem and finds the solution? Whatever your voice, reflect it in your marketing through a simple story or a sentence or two which exemplifies this style.
  5. Pick a Medium.
Facebook or YouTube doesn’t work for everyone. If you prefer to be heard and not seen, consider a podcast or Medium to post articles. If you like to be heard, set up your own YouTube channel and shine away. The point is: use the marketing medium that plays to your strengths. The more comfortable you are with your own marketing, the clearer your voice and message will be.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Dr. Seuss, who seemed to have a cure for all ailments, including voice it would seem:

“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.”
