Earlier this week, I had an interview where I was asked to do work that was 100% not me. It’s not what I offer, it’s not what I’m comfortable with and just for a moment, I considered doing it. Why? Because I love to serve and want my clients to feel they can trust me with any of their needs and have them met.
But that’s the thing – that particular need would not have, in fact, been met just by me saying yes.
When I said no, they were surprised. So was I to be honest. But I turned that no into an opportunity by demonstrating I had listened to everything they were sharing and instead of providing a service I would be horrible at, I could fill the hole they didn’t realize they had: email marketing. That is something I can do. And after a dialogue, they agreed.
All this is to say, be true to yourself and your business. Listen to your intuition – it’s gotten you this far, it’s more than likely right. After all, the real you is why people love doing business with you!
If you are put in a situation where you are asked to do something that will lower the standards of what you and your business provide, don’t do it. All your hard work has the potential to spin right down the drain simply because you tried to do too much.
Set yourself apart by saying no on occasion.
You will do yourself, and your client, a great service.
