The other day, I listened to a guy share how he landed a writing partnership and eventual book deal by essentially pitching someone – in the bathroom! Not just anyone, but the head honcho of a major company! I don’t know about you but that would be way out of my comfort zone.
But look where it got him. Where he’d always wanted to be. Writing, publishing, and creating with passionate people.
His story was among others shared during an online summit I attended recently. His was most memorable because it was most engaging and as a result, I was paying attention the rest of the time and therefore heard the tips and lessons he handed out. Real good stuff I may have missed if he hadn’t caught me with that story.
This is the same principle we can take to our everyday material when trying to reach our audiences – even our families or friends! We’ve got to captivate them before we can earn the right to their attention. Then, they’ll be open to what we have to say.
Stories aren’t just for kids. They’re not just for fiction. Stories are a spectacular way to share how something that has (or hasn’t) worked for you, can work for your clients as well. Stories inspire. They encourage. Stories provide us the foundations to build our hopes on and fodder for dreams we would otherwise not have the courage to pursue.
This month, while we celebrate the nation’s independence, let’s also celebrate story. It’s a remarkable and underutilized tool you have access to right now that can change your life, and the lives of those around you.
Doing unusual things is, well, unusual for me. I’m pretty predictable. Maybe that will just mean I have more opportunities to go extraordinary places and do extraordinary things, like the speaker did. It could also mean the door for me to tap unreached people is wide. What about you? Are you prepared to break out of your comfort zone and take advantage of the most unusual of circumstances? To take your dream by the hand and hold on to see where it leads you?
Let’s celebrate our stories and see where unusual goes…
